Feeling Flawless with Acne: Three Lessons from Beyoncé about Confidence

Posted on October 16, 2014 by Rachel Duran

Rachel DuranIn 2013, Beyoncé released “Flawless;” a powerful and undeniably addictive song—and an anthem for self-assurance. The song’s viral refrain, “I woke up like this,” has taken like wildfire to Instagram, spurring waves of fresh-faced, makeup-free, honest selfies that showcase bodies, and most notably, complexions and skin types of all kinds.

Even the Queen Bey herself has posted #flawless photos—all of which are stunning, of course. While not all of us can roll out of bed looking like a pop star (or count on our personal staff to prime us for the photoshoot) the secret behind Beyonce’s natural glow is sheer confidence. “Flawless” is her mantra and it’s not preaching perfection.

“It’s not to be taken literally,” said musician The-Dream, who helped co-write the song. “Nobody wakes up flawless. It’s an oxymoron. But the meaning behind it, to say ‘I just woke up feeling good,’ is what it’s about.”

Sometimes acne can keep us hiding under the sheets come morning but take note from Beyonce’s confidence and get ready to flaunt that face, whether you plan to take the stage or just the bus to work.

1. Own It

Your skin is your skin--there’s no use in hiding. Instead, accept yourself and take ownership of the person living past the blemishes. Try your own version of Beyonce’s smoldering alter ego, Sasha Fierce. In the words of B: "I now know that, yes, I am powerful," she says. "I'm more powerful than my mind can even digest and understand."

2. Work It.

Beyonce struts and shimmies. She shines and radiates. It’s obvious how at home she feels in her skin and body. Transcend your acne and bank on your strengths. Did you conquer that intense morning workout or impress everyone at a recent meeting? Or maybe you’re just feeling happy. Feeling good looks good.

3. Love It.

Appreciate yourself beyond the condition of your skin. Don’t wait to feel content until your breakout subsides—get comfortable being you on the daily. Treat yourself to a long walk, a delicious meal, or maybe a wild bout of dancing in your bedroom to your favorite Beyonce jams.
